How to Measure a Toilet Rough-In

2023-03-25

Measuring a toilet rough-in is an important step in choosing the right toilet for your bathroom. This may be the first time you hear the project rough-in but, anyway, the term is very popular in the field of plumbing. The rough-in is the distance from the wall behind the toilet to the center of the toilet’s drainpipe. Here are the steps to measure a toilet rough-in:

1.Remove the toilet seat cover and lid to expose the base of the toilet.

2.Measure the distance from the wall behind the toilet to the center of the closet flange bolts that secure the toilet to the floor. The closet flange is the pipe fitting that connects the toilet to the drainpipe.

3.Ensure that you measure from the finished wall, not the baseboard or molding.

4.The most common rough-in sizes are 10, 12, and 14 inches. However, rough-in sizes can vary, so it’s important to measure accurately.

5.If the distance you measured is between 10 and 14 inches, you can choose a toilet with a corresponding rough-in size.

6.If the rough-in distance is not a standard size, you may need to look for a toilet with an adjustable rough-in or consider moving the plumbing to accommodate a standard size toilet.

7.Record your measurements after compensating for the added distance due to the drywall. Make sure you leave yourself a bit of space because the last thing you want is a toilet that is jammed against the wall. It will not only ruin your paint, but will also be quite an inconvenience if you decide to replace your toilet.

As you see, it is a short, easy process yet ,by following these steps, you can measure the toilet rough-in accurately and select the right toilet for your bathroom.
